Detecting micro-sized objects in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images is difficult because each object covers only a few pixels. This study examines whether three modifications of YOLOv8s increase detection precision: an extra P2 detection head (stride 4), the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), and the Wise-IoU v3 loss. In the VisDrone training labels used here, 84.80% of 22,568 annotated objects are smaller than 32 × 32 pixels. Four models (M1–M4) were trained in a controlled ablation for 20 epochs with batch size 4 on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 (4 GB) and evaluated on 98 test images. The full model (M4) raised precision from 37.90% to 48.68% (+10.78 points), but recall fell from 27.74% to 19.26%, mAP@50 from 25.86% to 15.96%, and mAPsmall from 21.98% to 14.16%. A paired bootstrap (1,000 resamples) gave a per-image F1 difference of −5.56 points (95% CI −6.89 to −4.20). On one dense test image, false positives fell from 51 to 13. The training curves show that the P2 models started from a much higher loss and were still improving at epoch 20, so unequal weight initialization is a plausible but untested explanation. M4 ran at 37.1 FPS (26.99 ms) on the RTX 2050. The findings are exploratory and describe a high-precision, low-recall trade-off rather than an overall accuracy gain.
